ATS-FRIENDLY RESUME GUIDE

How to Create an ATS-Friendly Resume

An ATS-friendly resume is not about gaming a system. It is about making your relevant experience clear, readable, accurately worded, and easy to compare with the requirements of the job you want.

What does ATS-friendly mean?

Applicant tracking systems are used in many hiring workflows to store, organize, and search applications. Different systems and employers use them differently, so there is no universal score or secret formatting trick that guarantees an interview. Your goal is a clear resume whose language and structure make sense for both software and human reviewers.

ATS-friendly resume checklist

Use relevant keywords naturally

Start with the job posting. Look for skills, tools, responsibilities, certifications, and role-specific terms that repeatedly appear. Then identify which of those are genuinely supported by your experience and make sure the resume communicates them clearly. Copying every phrase from the posting can make the document inaccurate or awkward, so relevance matters more than repetition.

Good keyword use

The posting asks for C#, REST APIs, and Azure, and your experience genuinely includes those technologies. Make that experience visible in the relevant role and skills sections.

Poor keyword use

Adding tools, certifications, or responsibilities you have never used just because they appear in the job description. Accuracy should always come first.

Formatting matters, but content matters more

Use predictable headings, consistent dates, readable fonts, and a layout that keeps the text easy to scan. Then focus on the quality of the content: relevant experience, clear achievements, and evidence that matches the role. You can start with one of our resume templates and keep the wording fully editable.

Tailor before you check

An ATS review is most useful after the resume has been tailored to a specific posting. Follow our job-description tailoring guide, then use the checker to spot missing or underrepresented terms worth reviewing.
